The Hermitage Volunteer Fire Department began when the City was still Hickory Township. On May 5th, 1933, five original members formed the Hickory Township Volunteer Fire Department by signed charter. Since then the department has thrived through numerous members and leadership. The department survived the transition from Hickory Township to the City of Hermitage in the mid 1970s. We continue to grow with the City as Wheatland Borough and the City of Hermitage merged in 2024.
The Hermitage Volunteer Fire Department covers about 40 square miles, providing primary (first due) coverage to all of the City of Hermitage, which now includes Wheatland Borough as of January 1st, 2024, and parts of Lackawannock Township, by contract. We also respond to many other municipalities throughout Mercer, Lawrence, and Trumbull (OH) counties upon request.
The Hermitage Volunteer Fire Department provides a multitude of services to a population base over 16,000 people. Those same services are provided to an even larger daytime population of workers and shoppers.
The Hermitage Volunteer Fire Department provides what is called an all-hazards response. We provide the following emergency services to our coverage area:

Yes! If our fire fighters can safely access the tree we will attempt to rescue a cat from a tree. Though we have had several successful cat rescues, we cannot rescue them all.
